I am writing to you about the United Kingdom’s voting record at the United Nations.
From 2015 to date the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) voted 112 times against Israel.
The UK government supported Israel on three occasions, abstained on 27 occasions and voted against Israel on 82 resolutions.
To its shame, in 2019 the UK abstained on a vote on the fabricated charge that Israel had committed war crimes while defending itself from terror attacks on the Gaza border.
Defensive actions which were, for the record, endorsed by respected former members of the British Army.
If resolution activity is a measure of threat, then the United Nations believes that Israel’s democracy is more dangerous and insidious than Iran’s hegemony, North Korea’s armoury of weapons, the catastrophic Syrian civil war and all the other actions of most non-democratic states that comprise the United Nations, combined.
I would expect my country to stand up and expose this hypocrisy, state the facts and stand shoulder to shoulder with the only democracy in the Middle East.
Instead, as the figures record, the UK government repeatedly betrays a fellow democratic nation.
As recently as the UN General Assembly in November 2020 Israel was condemned 17 times, and the United Kingdom supported 13 of those motions.
The vitriol directed towards Israel at the United Nations is at best detached from reality and at worst fraudulent and antisemitic, and while there have been the occasional enlightened moments in the UK’s voting record, that makes our country complicit in these attacks.
I am therefore asking you, as my constituency MP, to do two things: –
- Can you please write to the Foreign Secretary, with this letter attached, and ask why the UK stands alongside some of the world’s worst human rights offenders against Israel?
- Will you please take a short time out of your busy schedule on Wednesday 3 March to attend a short virtual seminar where the respected Director of UN Watch, Hillel Neuer, will provide a live update on this issue. The details of this event will follow.
