Dear Minister for Education
I am writing to you about the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism.
The Northern Ireland Assembly adopted the IHRA definition in 2021, despite opposition from Sinn Fein.
However, while most taxpayer funded universities in England have adopted the same definition, our two universities (Queens and Ulster) have yet to do so.
Universities in Northern Ireland have a duty of care to all their students, and they are covered by equality legislation, but you will know that the IHRA definition is not enshrined in law.
Can I ask what steps your department can take to encourage our two universities to adopt the definition?
I have copied this letter to my MLAs for their information.
